My Left Foot

A film by Jim Sheridan

The film, My Left Foot, provides us with a protagonist who initially and superficially appears to be unlike most of us, and a narrative which at one level seems to be yet another 'triumph of the human spirit, rags-to-riches' story with a fairy-tale 'and-they-all-lived-happily-ever-after' ending. The relevance of this text lies in the deeper layers of the film. The rites of passage Christy experiences from boyhood to adolescence, and adolescence to young adult are the same rites of passage experienced by all adolescents.
