Slessor, like all poets, uses his imagination, but what he writes and what he imagines are determined by his experience and knowledge. This experience can be either direct, from his own life, or gained by reading and learning from the experiences of others. Many of his references are to knowledge gained from wide reading which like that of well-educated, young men of his day was essentially European in origin. He rejected the idea of an Australian poetry of drovers and shearers because it had no connection with his own life, nor with the world his imagination had fed on.
